Peaceful that’s where I am from
The dirt brown bayou Oh so calm, The spicy juice of the crawfish burns my lips The alligators all go to take a dip As I take a little back road in my mind Just forget all the times, The times that I failed in my life The times that I cried I’m living for now And now is bright Bright like a light Like the light in the sky Bright like the yellow On the old buildings downtown So bright that you will get dizzy And go round and round 8th Grade Student, Madison Middle School Poetry Warrior Project |

My place is where
I relax. It's filled with beautiful scenes, forestry and wildlife. The beauty embrases me like a mother's touch. The harmonies of the birds lull me together. The trees whisper my name through the flowing breeze. I sit under the majestic magnolia embracing my surroundings, embracing the banks of the bayou. Embracing the peace. 8th Grade Student, Madison Middle School Poet Warriors Project 2013 |

Date: 5/18/15 Hometown: Little Rock, AR College/Degree: Washington University-St. Louis / Latin American Studies & Spanish Parish: Concordia Grade(s): K-12 Subject(s): Spanish Other School/Community Roles: Co-Founder/Sponsor for Conexiones How’d Your Corps Experience Shape What You’re Doing Now: I am still in the classroom and I can without a doubt attribute that to my corps experience. I taught for three years in Concordia Parish and those were the most formative years of my life. What is most striking to me about this community is the warmth and optimism I have felt from many people I have met. Everyone is excited for new possibilities and willing to put their energy behind an effort to provide new opportunities for students. Through working with some amazing community partners in my corps experience, I garnered a deeper understanding of the attributes a leader in rural education must possess. These attributes include positivity, empathy, and respect, but greatest among them: humility. I continue to teach and I am pursuing school leadership long term due in part to the example of these leaders. I hope to continue to have a positive impact on social justice and economic equity in Louisiana through my roles in education. Click here to read more |
